Your mail server becomes unavailable

In your current set up your mail server becomes unavailable for a certain reason: network down, server crashes, server reboot, software maintenance and so on.

In this case your incoming emails will remain with the sending mail servers for some time. If you have a backup service from your ISP emails will get send to the backup mailservers configured in your DNS and stored for delivery.

When your mail server is back online you can expect an amount of incoming emails that aren't scanned or filtered by your systems. When your downtime is only minutes or even a few hours you shouldn't run into problems. If your downtime is longer due to technical hardware issues for example this could lead to a temporary high load of your mail server and services disrupting other services on your server when the server is back online.
